R&D Engineer

Responsibilities:

Research new technologies to develop new products, product specifications, and manufacturing processes as part of Advanced Product Quality Planning; define program needs in consideration of customer requirements and safety procedures; and evaluate requirements to determine chemical formulas, specifications, sample requirements, and test plans for new products. Develop process flow diagrams to indicate the flow of processes and equipment; prepare Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) control plans upon identifying production risks and potential failures in the design of the product or process; and troubleshoot issues arising in the actual manufacturing process and determine solutions, including yield, machine modifications, and new equipment capabilities. Design plastic automotive seating and interior trim products applying chemistry and engineering principles; perform tests and monitor production, as well as manage material test reports and appearance approvals; confer with Okamoto Japan employees in order to determine the most effective design and arrangement of manufacturing operations; and modify formulas to improve quality and drive down production costs. Collaborate with the sales team and conduct research to identify new products and product specifications; develop shipping plans for the customer; prepare production cost estimates; and prepare production progress reports for management and the customer.

Educ./experience:

Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Engineering, or related field, plus five (5) years of post-baccalaureate experience as a Technical Manager, Chemical Engineer, or in a related position within the automotive materials field. Experience must include formulation of polymers EPDM PP/PE, PVC, and Plasticizer; creating complex rubber formulations by blending base polymers with 10-20 ingredients; sourcing alternative raw materials globally; identify optimal settings for polymer testing tools; apply Six Sigma methodology to quality control process optimization; use of Scanning Electron Microscopes and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy to identify chemical composition; use of FMEA analysis to manufacturing processes for cost reduction.
